Fire at Guy Denning's new home in France
« Thread Started on Oct 24, 2007, 9:17pm »

Just got this from Guy's blog. Thankfully no one hurt. Amazingly too, most the latest work had been sent across to Red Propeller for the show on 5/11. Sadly, a great deal of older work has been lost. So sorry to hear this bad news Guy and wishing you well in getting your studio back to how you want it.

Lucky
We've had a sobering experience. A very sobering experience. Through some freakish accident that nobody can really work out we had a pretty serious fire in the studio last night. We were lucky that a passing kid saw the flames from the road and banged the brains out of the front door to alert us before it came to the point of no return; as well as as having the foresight to telephone the fire brigade before he alerted us. As it was I had time, with the assistance of the mystery French youth Nicolas and my brother-in-law (who's here on holiday) we managed to suppress the flames until the properly equipped blokes turned up. The heat, smoke and fumes were unbelievable but I'm so glad that we persevered. The heat left us with 300 melted favourite CDs, no working materials, a totally destroyed collection of over 20 years life drawings and other work, no studio doors, windows or electrics and the relief that the structure of the house was saved and none of us were hurt.
Most of the paintings for the impending 9-11 show at Red Propeller on the 5th November (no irony eh?!) were saved but I have lost virtually all the work on paper, 2 finished canvases and a couple of unfinished canvases.
I'll be spending the next few weeks working on replacing the pieces on paper as I hoped these would be more affordable for people than some of the canvases. It's also broadened the French vocabulary today. Déclaration de sinistre - insurance claim. Mètre fondu de l'électricité - melted electricity meter. Merci, merci, merci Nicolas - vous n'avez aucune idée comment reconnaissant nous tous sommes. I've probably buggered the grammar, but I hope you understand the sentiment.

Hope your all ok Guy!
Take it easy, coz a thing like this can really shake you up inside more than you might realize. I know it might sound stupid but whatever happen its a matter of looking for the positives in any situation. You might look back on this terrible event, in six months time and feel it has spurred you on with new ideas in a new direction.

happy to hear nobody was hurt , and damage not too extensive .. but what a shock to see the mess left behind ... the fire took no prisoners !! serious business that... I hope you can make the most of it though ... maybe this will lead to some inspirational pieces of work :)

All the best to ya.. spqr (Matt)

I'll use Colleen's log-in 'cuz I don't think I've got one. If I have I've forgotten it 'cuz I'm crap like that - and it's midnight and I'm on the vin rouge ;-) I posted this on the BANKSY forum but I'll stick it here too...

'Ere you lot. You can't believe what it means to see all your emails of support and concern (not to mention the posts here). I've only lost two canvases and about 5 drawings for the 5/11 show - hopefully I can replace the drawings. We were bloody lucky - the fire brigade dude said that if we hadn't tackled the blaze ourselves with the garden hose-pipe the house would probably be orbiting Jupiter now (the fire was literally minutes away from the oil heating tank). Anyway - the only injury I sustained was a burn on the neck from a dropping electrical wire (1950's French wiring is a bleedin' scream) and lung-fulls of white-spirit/turpentine/canvas air-shandy. I'm used to Zummerzet zider so I'll be alright ;-)
Monsieur Insurance-assessor visited today and he seemed quite amenable to the list of melted miserable music and art equipment. We were fully insured so there shouldn't be any worries on the music front. But you're still all stars. Cheers. Me and Col were really chuffed at your thoughts n' stuff. If you're coming to the show I'll see you there - but I'll warn you now. I'm a complete lightweight. I'll be legless by about nine!
