d**n I can't wait to see the results of the collaboration Guy is doing with harry Simmonds in Feb 09. I think I better start saving now though... Another much anticipated show..two of my top fave artists together all in one glorious package I defaulted on buying my Simmonds piece below boohoo ..gutted to say the least..f**k f**k f**k f**k f**k! I WILL have one of his pieces on my wall someday. Just praying I 'get in' early.. Go here and click on the picture to make it bigger- www.maugermodern.com/artists_works.php?idartist=32hope it goes to a good home, I think it is amazing, one of the only pieces at the London Affordable Art Fair that really stood out imo Saw it from about twenty metres away and immediately knew it was one of Harry's. Links- www.maugermodern.com/index.phpwww.hspaintings.com/gallery_17673.htmlRichard and Gemma from Mauger Modern look forward to your calls! I am highly enthused about Harry's work, was kindly introduced to him at the 'Not a Penny..' Bristol. Plus a lady whom models for some of Harry's pieces. Had spoken with a forum member previously at Guy's 'Same nuts..' show in London about Harry's work and my interest just grew and grew. The energy coming off Harry is amazing, extremely focused and a true gent. You have got to check his work out (as ever, online just don't cut it!). Its when you realise the scale of the pieces too, that it all comes together. I readily admit, that I 'didn't get it' at first, it took me a few times..then, like a sledgehammer dropped from the peak of Everest it struck me. Awesome. Yes, there are similarities to Frank Helmut Auerbach..hardly surprising when you realise Harry studied him whilst being mentored by Auerbachs understudy (if that's the correct terminology) at University.. Hoping this thread will bring out some of the other Simmonds fans here..ahem ;D

Dropped in to Harry`s studio today by chance and saw his new work for the up and coming show with Guy next year. Some very interesting concepts rising from the very paint laden floor! Catch his work while prices are still reasonable because its only going one way as people realise how good he is.A very talented and passionate artist and I am very lucky to own two and still want more !!

Lucky lucky man, you've just made me as jealous as hell now!! ;D Your pieces are fantastic..I can see why you would want more too. I heard that (rumour) Harry is doing some sort of time distortion work.. 100% agree downside, Harry has such a bright future ahead of him, a very promising artist. Once people take note, it may be really difficult to acquire pieces (ok..impossible!) at the current pricing structure. Cant emphasise this enough really.. no hype Hope to see all the usual suspects at the show..AND, hopefully, the elusive ones too!!

I was chatting to Liegh from Tunnadine and the chap from Mauger last Friday at the Graffle (sorry I forgot your name, but as you won on the Graffle I don't feel too bad) The show sounds very exciting....I might have to sell something before Feb....

Any updates or teasers on this.... Guy??? And do I need to start saving now for one of the pieces? ;D Well, all I can say is that when the suggestion was originally made I quietly ignored it and hoped it would go away. But Harry asked too if I'd be up for it and I said that we must have the final say on whether the work would show or not. I sent Harry a decent-sized drawing to work on and two spare pieces of heavyweight paper. He sent me back two paintings that he had started and I just looked at them for weeks! Finally got the courage to go at one and after repeated visits it seemed to come out okay. So I worked on the other too before sending them back with another sketch that I'd done. The difficult thing was not to obliterate Harry's work - it still needed to look like both of us had been there. I just hope that Harry was happy with the result too! And as for saving up - I'm determined that the galleries should apply a degree of common sense to pricing in the current climate. Obviously there are people that have paid good money in the past for work and they shouldn't see their faith in me be devalued - but equally I'd like to hope that we're all in this for the long haul. If everybody else has to tighten their belts I don't see why I should be immune. A French friend told me today 'a rich artist is a dead artist'. They're good on pithy phrases, the French!

Thought I'd finally register to the forum and post some comments since Guy has been kind enough to do so on mine. I certainly was happy with the results Guy! I think that they are superb. What supprised me was that although the two pieces have been worked quite heavily they still retain the look that they had when I had finished working on them and they still even resemble the model. And as I said to Guy recently, I had expected them to become less abstract after he had finished them but in fact I think that the opposite is true. It made me realise that the marks that I had made on them had perhaps been a little 'tight'.
I do appreciate Guy's willingness to take part and can quite see why it may not at first have seemed the most appealing prospect! But it was an experiment that I had always wanted to attempt for various reasons. I thought that it would be interesting to begin a painting on a canvas/piece of paper that had already been worked on by someone else because I thought that the other person's marks would suggest possibilities that one might not have otherwise thought of oneself. I think that challenging one's normal working routine is neccesary if one is to avoid stasis or dogma and that this experiment might be one way of doing that.
I only recieved Guy's second piece recently so I am still in the process of working on his pictures but I am really enjoying the experience of 'morphing' his model into mine. And I promise to finish them before the exhibition opens in Feb!

Great concept guys! I completely understand your comments Harry re: using someone elses observations and interpretations and appling them to your work. As a designer, we do this all the time and an a result, the work is always developing a stronger and more powerful identity and concept. I'm sure the same process would work well in the art, although I appreciate art is very personal and emotional which one would hate to be misinterpreted or ruined.
On reflection, I think this would be a brave, challenging and exciting show... would it be a first? 2 people working on the same pieces alone with no 'brief'?

Thanks for the update and insight, you're a good man Mr. Denning and nice to hear Harry's thoughts as well... Really looking forward to seeing the outcome of these works, I don't own any of Harry's work as of yet but I'm very impressed with what I've seen so far, so maybe this collaboration will be my chance... I hope!!!

Just brought myself up to speed with this development. Very excited about seeing some pics of what Guy and Harry put together. Any collab's should be special, although I admit, quite difficult to imagine at this stage. Good luck with this project.
