I'm fascinated to see how Guy's "cashing the put options" goes at the auction in New York tomorrow night. It's a fantastic piece, when it was displayed at the 5/11 show, I was stuck in front of it (and the "Raft of the Medusa") for ages.....had to go for something a little cheaper. Thinking back, that was a hell of a collection of work that Guy put together for that show.

I see ALL 3 of Guy's pieces sold. Shouldn't be suprised I suppose, they're great works...but i did wonder about the subject matter of "Cashing the put options" and how that would go down in New York.....pretty well it would seem

Shouldn't be suprised I suppose, they're great works...but i did wonder about the subject matter of "Cashing the put options" and how that would go down in New York.....pretty well it would seem I disagree. I think that's a low price for such a superbly executed, 4ft x 4ft oil painting. Someone got an absolute bargain imho. Perhaps because I was living in NYC in 2001, this piece has always appealed to me in a big way. I feel that Guy's work is not just about looking pretty, it's about generating a real emotional response, by commenting on real issues and current affairs and this painting brings back a lot of different emotions and memories for me. Whether others see it in a special light also I don't know, but were money no object, thisis a piece that would have a place in my home, for sure!

I'm not saying that someone didn't get a great price on it, just that all 3 of Guy's peices selling ...in what was a very slow night of bidding...speaks volumes. And let's be honest, it's a challenging piece to have up on your wall.

I tend to agree with Rhodesy, I think the subject matter would have appealed to a minority and that is not taking anything away from the beauty of the piece. I agree it was cheap but on the other hand all Guys pieces sold where a lot of other artists crashed and burned. It again reinforces the arguement that in these present times you must buy what you like and not to stash away hoping for a profit in 6 months!
